Little Taiko Boy

This mandala charts the relationships between characters and concepts in the video Little Taiko Boy. The golden sun disc represents the Shinto Goddess Amaterasu Oomikami. In the video she returns to Tokyo to bring knowledge to Ni-Chome. The circle also echoes the Taiko Drum and it:s drummer bringing heartbeat to life and the drive pulling us together. The Mistletoe, a plant which remains green in the toughest Winter, is a Christmas tradition often hung over a doorway. When couples meet under the Mistletoe, they are allowed one kiss. In this project, we claim this as a new tradition for gay couples. The blue jeweled Condom is a magical gift with special powers since it can literally save your life. The Crown belongs to Amaterasu and represents truth and knowledge. These objects are linked together by blue threads, representing the air from which they all descend and the nobility of pure love.
The second triangle links the couples whom represent three of the riskiest situations that can lead to unsafe sex; the Bathhouse, Love Hotel with a sex worker, and cruising. The threads create a pink triangle, linking each of the men to each other and symbolizing the brotherhood they are a part of, even if they do not perceive or fully understand this truth.
The disco Tengu bring joy, chaos, sex, energy and are at both dangerous and fun. We can see them as external characters, but I believe they come out from inside of us. We can not entirely control them, but with the light from Amaterasu we might be able to shape their behavior. Regardless, they link us to each other through the red threads.
